The known planets can be divided into 2 groups;


 

The four planets closest to the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are called the terrestrial planets. The term Earth is Latin for land, and these planets are known as terrestrial planets because they are made of hard solid rock.  

 


The other four planets far from the Sun are Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus, known as the "Jupiter planets". Jupiter planets are much larger than terrestrial planets, lacking a metallic core and hard surface.

The terrestrial and Jupiter planets are separated by the asteroid belt orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.


 

These days, Uranus and Neptune are called Uranus planets because they are much smaller than the Jupiter planets and have a coating of methane and ice around the planets. .
